12/15/2020 2:15 p.m. (Las Vegas, NV) — Tragedy has struck the Las Vegas region just before the holidays, where the Las Vegas police have reported the death of a young mother and injuries of two children this afternoon.

At around 2:15 p.m. on December 15, the 26-year-old woman was stopped near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Bonanza Road when a Nissan Pathfinder was struck by a white Ford Mustang that had apparently driven through the stop signal while headed northbound.

The collision caused the Pathfinder to collide with the woman and her two young children, a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl.

The driver of the Pathfinder, the mother and her two children were all transported to the hospital where the mother was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Alcohol was not a likely factor in this accident.

The intersection remained closed while officers investigated the scene.

It is unknown if the children have other guardianship figures in place. Regardless, it will be an emotional holiday season for the entire family.

Pedestrians are always at danger when vehicles lose control and operation of their motor vehicles. Pedestrians stand to lose the most in an automobile/pedestrian accident because they have no protection from the catastrophic forces of vehicles weighing more than a ton.

This is one of those situations where there might not have been much, if anything, that the mother could have done to avoid being hit by the car.  In this case, the accident proved fatal, which will result in a potential wrongful death claim on behalf of the children and any other heirs that the woman had at the time of her death.

Wrongful death is a cause of action which provides close relatives with both economic and non-economic relief as a result of being affected by the death of a loved one.

Increase in Las Vegas Intersection Accidents

Intersection car accidents are a significant problem in Las Vegas, as they can result in serious injuries or fatalities for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, there were approximately 19,000 motor vehicle accidents in the city in 2019, with a significant number of these accidents occurring at intersections. Factors that can contribute to intersection accidents include distracted driving, failure to obey traffic signals or signs, and speeding. In addition, many intersection accidents are caused by drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The Nevada Department of Transportation reports that in 2019, 52% of all fatal crashes in the state occurred at or near an intersection. To address the risks associated with intersection accidents, it’s essential for drivers to remain vigilant and focused while driving, obey traffic laws, and avoid distractions such as cell phones or other electronic devices. Pedestrians and bicyclists should also take care when crossing intersections, using designated crosswalks and following traffic signals.
