A man was killed on Saturday morning while walking across the I-15 freeway near Sahara. He was hit by multiple vehicles and died of blunt-force trauma. The 69-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The reason for him being on the freeway is currently unknown. The man’s death was determined to be accidental in nature. It is unlikely that the drivers who hit the man will be held responsible for the accident as there are no pedestrian walkways on the I-15 freeway in that area, so there was no reasonable or foreseeable way to avoid an accident of this nature.

This must have been a frightening experience for everyone involved.

Our hearts go out to the family of the decedent who was identified as Robert Varacalli.

Dangers of walking on the freeway

Walking on a freeway is an extremely dangerous activity that can lead to serious injuries or fatalities. The high speeds of vehicles, the lack of pedestrian infrastructure, and the absence of physical barriers between pedestrians and vehicles make walking on a freeway incredibly hazardous.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2019, 6,205 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. While not all of these fatalities occurred on freeways, walking on a freeway greatly increases the risk of being involved in a fatal crash. Pedestrians who walk on a freeway are exposed to a number of hazards, including vehicles traveling at high speeds, changing traffic patterns, and limited visibility due to obstructions or poor lighting.

Additionally, pedestrians who walk on freeways may be at risk of being struck by debris or other objects that are kicked up by passing vehicles. Walking on a freeway is also illegal in most states and can result in fines or other penalties.

In order to stay safe while walking, it is essential to use designated pedestrian infrastructure such as sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian bridges or tunnels. If these facilities are not available, it is best to walk on the shoulder of the road, facing traffic and as far away from the roadway as possible. In general, it is important to always be aware of one’s surroundings and to exercise caution when walking in areas with high volumes of traffic.
