Stay focused on the road or pay a fine! The Henderson Police Department announced a 10-day campaign targeting distracted drivers commencing April 12, 2019 through April 22, 2019, and they mean business.

“As part of Joining Forces, a statewide law enforcement program, agencies will work together in an effort to make roadways safer by enforcing distracted driving laws,” Henderson Police Department.

The department has received additional federal funding to employ extra patrol units through Nevada’s Department of Public Safety and will have officers in full force searching for distracted drivers.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents in Las Vegas, Nevada, next to drunk driving, and it includes texting while driving, eating while driving, health and age-related conditions, and any other form of distraction that takes a drivers attention away from the roadway (even while stopped at a red-light!) The penalties assessed can begin at $250 immediately, and even more for second and third time offenders.

Distracted Driving Statistics in Henderson, NV

According to data from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), distracted driving was a contributing factor in 17% of all fatal crashes and 13% of all injury crashes in Nevada in 2019. These distractions can include texting, using a mobile device, eating, drinking, and other activities that divert a driver’s attention away from the road.

In Henderson specifically, the Henderson Police Department reported 190 citations for distracted driving in 2020, a decrease from the 248 citations issued in 2019. Additionally, the department reported a total of 703 accidents related to distracted driving in 2020, accounting for approximately 14% of all reported accidents in the city that year.

To combat distracted driving, Henderson has implemented several measures, including a ban on handheld devices while driving and increased enforcement of distracted driving laws. The city has also launched public education campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and encouraging safer driving behaviors.
