Tesla crash statistics

Tesla, a leading electric car manufacturer, has faced scrutiny over the safety of their vehicles due to several high-profile accidents involving their Autopilot system. Autopilot is Tesla’s semi-autonomous driving feature that allows the car to steer, accelerate, and brake on its own, but still requires the driver to remain attentive and ready to take control at any moment.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla vehicles have been involved in a number of accidents, including some fatal ones, while using Autopilot. However, it’s worth noting that Tesla’s own data suggests that Autopilot reduces the likelihood of accidents compared to traditional driving. In the first quarter of 2021, Tesla reported one accident for every 4.19 million miles driven in which Autopilot was engaged, compared to one accident for every 2.05 million miles driven without Autopilot.

Despite these statistics, critics argue that Autopilot can create a false sense of security for drivers, leading them to become complacent and less attentive while behind the wheel. Additionally, some safety experts have raised concerns that the system may not be able to detect all potential hazards on the road, such as stationary objects or pedestrians.
